Since its inception in 1947 – not long after the storm clouds of World War II were blown off the European continent – the sport of motocross has officially been considered a World Championship discipline of motorcycle racing. In the 50 years since there has been one rider, much more so than any of the celebrated riders who came before him, who is considered the single greatest racer of all-time. So much so he’s now commonly referred to as the GOAT – or Greatest Of All-Time. His name is Ricky Carmichael, and from the time he first turned professional in 1996 until he officially retired from the sport during the autumn of 2007, he had won a mind boggling 15 AMA Pro Racing Championships, 150 AMA Pro Racing races and the prestigious Motocross of Nations. In fact, in the very final race of his career on Sunday, Sept. 23rd, 2007 and before the 40,000 fans that encroached upon Maryland’s Budds Creek MX Park, Carmichael led Team USA to victory at the ‘07 Motocross of Nations. As he began to contemplate retiring from motocross, “RC”, as he’s known in the MX industry, began moving towards his next goal: Leaving a mark on the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing. In 2007, Carmichael signed a contract with Ginn Racing (soon to merge with DEI), and under the tutelage of NASCAR legend Mark Martin, began to compete in Super Late Model event throughout the Southeastern United States. Carmichael began racing cars full-time in 2008, racing under the aegis of Ken Schrader Racing. In 2009, Carmichael was signed by the high-profile Kevin Harvick All-Stars team to drive the Monster Energy-backed #4 Chevrolet Silverado in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Ricky enjoyed two top 10 finishes and rounded out the year by being winning NASCAR’s Camping World Truck Series Most Popular Driver award. For the 2010 season, Carmichael will compete on the asphalt ovals of the United States of America for Turner Motorsports. Through a multi-year deal backed by Monster Energy, RC will compete in the entire NCWTS, as well as nine ARCA races. Carmichael and the championship-caliber team will receive guidance and technical support from KHI. Next stop: The 31-degree high banks of the 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway and the beginning of RC’s 2010 racing season.
